Trieste Prima 2019, a Festival worth to remember

The Trieste Prima 2019 festival, held from 26 October to 14 December, started at the "Tartini" Hall of the Trieste Music Conservatory and continued at the "Revoltella" Museum Auditorium in Trieste; some events have also been presented out of the town of Trieste, in the regional hinterland, at the Castelmonte Sanctuary and at the Auditorium of Povoletto as well as at the "Gortani" Museum in Tolmezzo.

A related event of the Festival has been the participation to the performance of the winning scores of the international composition competition "19th Premio Trio di Trieste - Giampaolo Coral Award", held in Trieste at the Sala del Ridotto "Victor De Sabata" between the 7th and the 9th of September.

A wide-ranging edition, therefore, which included also the celebration of the great Tuscan genius Leonardo da Vinci in his five hundred years anniversary, with the presentation of the "Leonardo accordion", during one of the festival concerts, on November 16, at the Museum Revoltella.

Corrado Rojac presenting the Trieste Prima 2019 festival at the "Museo Revoltella"

The Trieste Prima 2019 theme, "mystical music", has been a resounding success with the public and, as the "trascendent" is someway close to musical art, the feeling of "other" time and space was constantly in the air during the concerts of the season.

Beginning with Canti dell'eremo, a piece commissioned to the Cremonese composer Gabrio Taglietti, premiered on October 26 at the "Tartini" Hall, starring the Quartetto di Fiesole and the pianist Andrea Rucli. Inspired by the legendary figure of the samurai poet Saigyo Hoshi, and thanks to the School of Music and New Tecnologies of the Conservatory, which took care of the sound direction, the composition resounded cloaked in enveloping mistery of the great mystics.

On November 2, the theme touched Arvo Pärt's "religious music", as the "Trio di Mantova" proposed Mozart-adagio by the Estonian maestro, a singular interpenetration of two musical aesthetics, amazing in its being "out of time".

On November 9, the extraordinary pianist Alfonso Alberti proposed the complete performance of Olivier Messiaen's Vingt regards, enveloping the large audience with the Cristian mysticism aura.

After the presentation of "Leonardo accordion", the concert on November 16 was linked to the presentation conference with the present day concert accordion, starring the Moldovan virtuoso Ghenadie Rotari along with the SonoMania Ensemble, from Bucharest, emerging group in the contemporary music scene; the program was dedicated to new Romanian music.

The indication lontano, in Penderecki's Sextet, which prescribes the horn player to play off stage, is a metaphor of the spatial transition to which the dimension of mysticism leads us. The Philarmonisches Ensemble, of Turin, performed the masterpiece of the Polish composer combining the purity of the chamber ensemble with rare cultivated skill and dedication.

The Philarmonisches Ensemble

On November 30 it was the turn of Lode all'eternità di Gesù (Praise to the eternity of Jesus), for cello and piano, by Olivier Messiaen again, performed by the Duo Lukic - Piemonti, to transport the audience into the emotion of contemplation. The evening was engaging also thanks to the introduction carried out by Corrado Rojac, which illustrated the abysmal situation of the concentration camp where the piece was written in 1941.

On December 6 it was Ivan Fedele's Metal east-journey that enveloped the large audience in the immanence of oriental percussion, starring the pecussion virtuoso Thierry Miroglio. Remaining in the "oriental dimension", the Topolovska Orkestra, on December 14, concluded the festival with a masterpiece of "American mystical music": In C by Terry Riley is in fact inspired by India, and created, upon listening, that magical fullness of the "community" that has always distinguished this piece.

The presence of Trieste Prima festival was reported this year, as usual, by local newspapers (Il Piccolo, Primorski dnevnik), but also by Messaggero Veneto.

As in the past editions, the Festival has been followed by many media such as RAI, RTV Koper Capodistria, RadioAttività, and in 2019 there has been also an increase of presence of Trieste Prima Festival on the web, in particular on the websites www.lesalonmusical.it, www.ildiscorso.it, www.triesteallnews.it and www.instart.info.

The partnerships with prestigious cultural subjects such as Chamber Music, Euritmica, Euritmia and the "Gaggia" association gave to the Trieste Prima 2019 Festival a particular impulse, given the presence of the festival in Castelmonte, Povoletto as well as Tolmezzo and thanks to Chamber Music at the Sala del Ridotto "Victor De Sabata".

The internationality dimension of the festival was assured by artists who performed, such as the incomparable French percussionist Thierry Miroglio and the SonoMania of Bucharest, as well as the national excellence, the "Quartetto di Fiesole".

The Quartetto di Fiesole

On November 2 was premiered the piece Petit cahier anti-mistique, a composition commissioned by the Trieste Prima Festival to the young composer Davide Coppola, which inspired by fragments - recited by the pianist - taken from texts by Edgar Allan Poe, in the perspective of a sinergy between the arts, which is a constant aspect of the events proposed by Trieste Prima.

At Trieste Prima 2019 was also present the music of Giampaolo Coral thanks to the splendid performances of the Mantuan pianist Leo Zunica with the performance of two pieces of the Klavieralbum II: Der Wanderer and Dämmerung.

Terry Riley and Giampaolo Coral

The season was presented, concert after concert, by Corrado Rojac, enriching the events with a highly appreciated didactic value; some presentations were real lectures, such as "Leonardo accordion", on November 16, and the "Vingt regards", on November 9. The Regards were also widely presented by the introductory article to the festival, signed by Paolo Petazzi, on the Trieste Prima booklet.

Are we going to meet at the Trieste Prima 2020 again?

A magnificent piano quartet

On November 29, the Chromas association, the Chamber Music association and the Trieste Conservatory organized a marvellous concert. At the "Tartini" Conservatory the Josef Suk Piano Quartet played the Martinu Piano Quartet and two first performances, Quartettsatz by D'Amico and Overload by Francesco Ciurlo. Martinu's music was simply perfect, D'Amico was interpreted as a "symphonic" piece, Ciurlo's composition sounded as a breathtaking "accumulating tension music". Unforgettable evening. Encore from Dvorak chamber repertoire.

An electronic flute for Trieste Prima

On November 21 at the Conservatorio "Tartini" the contemporary music festival Trieste Prima 2018 presented a concert performed by the flautist Luisa Sello and the Scuola di Musica e Nuove Tecnologie of the Conservatorio "Tartini". The program included, among various very interesting pieces, the first performance of Ostinato 2 by Adriano Guarnieri. There was a hommage to the founder of the festival Giampaolo Coral as well. Indeed, Luisa Sello played his Esorcismo del serpente marino. Great success.

Icarus' flight

On November 16 the Trieste Prima 2018 contemporary music festival presented the Icarus Ensemble. They played seven first performances: indeed, the program presented pieces of seven composers (Gabrio Taglietti, Corrado Rojac, Stefano Taglietti, Paolo Rotili, Luigi Abbate, Claudio Rastelli and Nicola Straffelini) referred to the history of music. The results were surprising: for example, Gabrio Taglietti made a parody of some middle age songs and dances, whereas Paolo Rotili referred to Monteverdi feeling nostalgia for the famous Italian opera of the 17th century. Among the first performances there was a hommage to the founder of the festival, Giampaolo Coral: the Icarus Ensemble played his Raps II. Great musicians, great success.

The second Trieste Prima 2018 concert presented the mezzosoprano Barbara Jernejcic Fürst

On November 10 the second concert of the contemporary music festival Trieste Prima 2018 presented the Slovenian vocalist Barbara Jernejcic Fürst. At the Museo Revoltella the mezzosoprano interpreted pieces written by Slovenian composers Larisa Vrhunc, Urska Pompe and Brina Jez Brezavscek. The three compositions could be interpreted as a voyage: if Regen Liebe by Larisa Vrhunc is a piece that explains the contents of some poems, Vrata dneva by Urska Pompe is a composition that is inspired by a poem but written without words. Song G za Barbaro by Brina Jez Brezavscek concludes our "musical voyage" as a vocal music that does not need any poem; the score is based on predominance of graphic elements. There were presented two other compositions as well, written by Vinko Globokar and Mauricio Kagel. Globokar's composition really moved the public: Second Thoughts finishes remembering the terrible 1991-1999 Balkans war. Mauricio Kagel's Der Turm zu Babel amazed the audience. As a matter of fact, the piece is a "paradox": indeed, it presents the same biblical Babel text in different languages. Barbara Jernejcic Fürst is an outstandingly talented artist. Standing ovation.

The first concert of the Trieste Prima 2018 contemporary music festival

At the Museo Revoltella on November 3 the Ex Novo Ensemble opened the Trieste Prima 2018 contemporary music festival. They interpreted the theme of the concert season, named il futuro anteriore, as a journey from the 20th century music to the present time, playing for exemple the Sonatine for clarinet and piano by Honegger, but also Rechant for solo clarinet by Holliger. The concert came to a triumphal end thanks to Un suono lontano, a first performance of an interesting piece by Ada Gentile, based on the "immanence of the present".

Trieste Prima 2017 concluded by the Slowind Quintet

On December 6 at the Museo Revoltella Auditorium the wind quintet Slowind concluded the Trieste Prima 2017 contemporary music festival. They played Five Studies by Niels Rosing-Schow, five musical moments, which delicate features resembled five miniatures, Dogodki II (Events II) by Lojze Lebic, a gorgeous theatrical piece and Flamen by Ivan Fedele. In this composition the author structurates the musical space in an architectural way, indeed, the five players are disposed at a certain distance to create suggestive resonances. Introducted by Corrado Rojac, the concert was concluded by the famous Wind Quintet op. 26 by Arnold Schönberg, a masterpiece that changed the history of music.

The next Trieste Prima festival will start in 2018, November. (Photo: the Slowinds)

Notice

The Trieste Prima 2017 contemporary music festival will be concluded by the Slowind quintet at the Museo Revoltella (via Diaz 27, Trieste) on December 6 (at 18.00).

On December 5 at 17.30 there is a special evening. At the Museo della Comunità ebraica (via del Monte 5/7, Trieste) our vice-president Monika Verzár Coral is presenting the first Italian showing of the silent film Die Stadt ohne Juden. Directed by Hans Karl Breslauer in 1926 to satirize the anti-Semitism, it was based on the book of the same title by Hugo Bettauer.

Duo Novalis and Giorgio Klauer bewitched the audience

On December 1 at the Museo Revoltella the Trieste Prima 2017 contemporary music festival presented Duo Novalis. The pianists Stefania Amisano and Claudio Cristani played an ambitious program. The Clementi's Madrigale evoked a really mechanical atmosphere, typical for the Sicilian composer; Kurtág's Games echoed with the appropriate "autobiographical" intention. The music by Lin - and its background plaintive echoes - were an interesting surprise; Deutsch's Souvenirs d'une aura and Winkler's Black Mirrors II  were, respectively, a "perfect classical" and an "incredibly symphonic" sound challenge. The Mirrors were supported by Klauer's fantastic sound direction. The event was a breathtaking experience. (Photo: Duo Novalis)

Four saxophones for Mario Marzi

On November 22 at the gorgeous Sala Tartini of the Trieste Conservatory, the Trieste Prima 2017 contemporary music festival presented the saxophonist Mario Marzi. The soloist was accompained by the Scuola di Musica e Nuove Tecnologie of the Conservatory; as a matter of fact, some pieces were for saxophone and live electronics. Among the composers Marzi played there was Giampaolo Coral and his Munch as well. In this case the theme of the festival, "music and vocalism", explored the sublimation of the term, because the Trieste composer wrote the piece following an internal resonance to Munch's paintings. The concert was fantastic, Marzi begun it playing the alto saxophone, but the second piece was performed on the soprano and the next on the baritone and so on, the soloist played all the saxophone family. Spectacularly. The audience applauded thunderously for a long time. (Photo: Mario Marzi)
